Cause Of Death
In November 2017, Pope went missing from her home in Swanage. Her body was found a week later in woodland near the town. She had been strangled.
Pope was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at a young age. She had a history of self-harm and had been admitted to the Priory Hospital in Dorset for treatment.
The IOPC investigated the police handling of Pope’s disappearance and found that there were “serious failings” in the way the case was handled. The IOPC also found that there was a “culture of complacency” within Dorset Police that had allowed these failings to happen.
Pope’s death sparked a national conversation about the treatment of women with disabilities and the lack of understanding of ASD within the criminal justice system.
