Joe Schoen was born in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1979. He attended DePauw University, where he played college football as a quarterback as a freshman and wide receiver his final three years. Joe Schoen served as a captain during his senior season and was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Joseph graduated from DePauw University in 2001 with a communications degree.

Schoen was a two-year starter at quarterback for the DePauw Tigers. He threw for 1,681 yards and 13 touchdowns as a freshman, and then led the team to a 9-2 record as a sophomore. However, he suffered a shoulder injury during his sophomore season and was forced to switch to wide receiver.

Joe Schoen continued to be a productive player at wide receiver for the Tigers. He caught 63 passes for 741 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior, and then led the team with 65 catches for 910 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior. He was named a team captain and was also selected to the All-American Athletic Conference first team.

Schoen’s college football career helped him develop the skills and knowledge that he would later use in his NFL career. On January 21, 2022, Schoen was named the general manager of the New York Giants. He hired Brian Daboll, with whom he worked with in Buffalo. Schoen also led the draft effort, selecting Oregon Defensive End Kayvon Thibodeaux and Alabama Offensive Tackle Evan Neal, respectively, with the Giants two first round picks.
