Biography

Lady Nwanneka Ekweremadu was born on September 10, 1966, to Chief John and Lolo Monica Okah of Umuori hamlet, Enugu-Agu, Achi, Oji River LGA, and Enugu State.

She attended Iva-Valley Primary School and Idaw River Girls’ Secondary School in Enugu. She continued her education at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu, and then at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where she earned a BSc. (Second Class, Upper Division) with honors in Accountancy and Economics.

Nwanneka continued her education at the UNN Enugu Campus, where she earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA), and then at Ebonyi State University, Abakiliki, where she earned a Master of Science (MSc.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accountancy in 2009 and 2015, respectively.

 Lady Ekweremadu taught at the Federal Government College in Enugu and the Federal Government Boys’ College in Apo, Abuja.

Arrest of Nwanneka Ekweremadu

She and her husband have been charged with allegedly organizing the transfer of a kid from Nigeria to the United Kingdom for organ harvesting. The illegal removal of a person’s organs without their consent is known as organ harvesting.

The duo was apprehended at Heathrow Airport after police received a tip. The arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation by the UK police department. Since May 2022, when the Metropolitan Police Department became aware of potential violations of the Modern Slavery Act.

In May 2023, a UK court condemned former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months in jail for an organ trafficking plan.

The court also condemned his wife, Beatrice, to four years and six months in prison, while Dr Obinna Obeta, the medical doctor who functioned as a’middleman’ in the scheme, was sentenced to ten years in prison and his medical license was suspended.

Career 

Dr. Nwanneka Ekweremadu’s support for her husband has been unwavering. Managing the household, her professional obligations, and the enormous demands of her husband’s far-reaching political field beyond Enugu State. She is the engine that drives her husband’s non-profit organization, the Ikeoha Foundation, Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

Scholarships, vocational trainings, poverty alleviation, adult literacy programs, student quiz competitions, etc., are just a few of the ways the Foundation has helped many women, widows, and young people find purpose in life.

The old adage that “behind every successful man, there is always a prayerful and intelligent woman” is proven true by her unwavering devotion to her spouse.

Dr. Mrs. Ekweremadu was the Deputy Accountant General of the Federation, having previously worked in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and as a professor at Federal Government College Enugu and Federal Government College Appo in Abuja.
