Who is Martin Amis?

Martin Louis Amis FRSL (Born 25 August 1949 and Died 19, May 2023) was a novelist, essayist, memoirist, and screenwriter from England. Money (1984) and London Fields (1989) are his best-known works. 

He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his memoir Experience, and he was nominated for the Booker Prize twice (in 1991 for Time’s Arrow, and again in 2003 for Yellow Dog). From 2007 to 2011, Amis was Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester’s Centre for New Writing.

The Times named him one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945 in 2008.

Biography

Martin Amis was born on August 25, 1949, at Oxford’s Radcliffe Maternity Hospital. His father, novelist Kingsley Amis, was the son of a mustard manufacturer’s clerk from Clapham, London, and his mother, Hilary (“Hilly”) Ann Bardwell, was the daughter of a Ministry of Agriculture civil servant from Kingston upon Thames.

His older brother, Philip, died in 2000, as did his younger sister, Sally, for whose birth Philip Larkin composed “Born Yesterday.” His parents married in Oxford in 1948 and divorced when Amis was 12; after the divorce, Hilly and the children moved to Mallorca, Spain, where they lived for a time with Robert Graves.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Amis attended a number of schools, including an international school in Mallorca, Bishop Gore School in Swansea, and Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, where he was described as “unusually unpromising” by one headmaster. The success of his father’s first novel, Lucky Jim (1954), moved the family to Princeton, New Jersey, where his father lectured.

Amis played John Thornton in the film adaptation of Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica when he was 15 years old. As a teenager, he referred to himself as a “short-arse” since he was 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m) tall.

He received a celebratory first in English from Exeter College, Oxford, “the kind where you’re called in for a viva and the examiners tell you how much they enjoyed reading your papers.”

Personal Life

In 1984, Martin Amis married American professor Antonia Phillips, with whom he had two kids. Towards the end of that marriage, he met writer Isabel Fonseca, whom he married in 1996 and had two daughters with.  In 2008, his daughter Delilah, born in 1976 to Lamorna Seale, gave birth to a son; he later described his new status as “like getting a telegram from the mortuary.”

Cause of Death

Amis died of Oesophageal cancer on May 19, 2023, at his home in Florida. He died at the age of 73, just like his father. Amis had been a smoker his entire life, as had his buddy Christopher Hitchens, who died of complications from the same type of cancer.

Career

Martin is the author of the novels The Rachel Papers, Dead Babies, Success, Other People, Money, London Fields, Time’s Arrow: Or the Nature of the Offense, The Information, Night Train, Yellow Dog, House of Meetings, The Pregnant Widow, Lionel Asbo: State of England, and The Zone of Interest. In addition, he has written the screenplays for the films London Fields and Time’s Arrow: Or the Nature of the Offence.

Martin Amis is the author of a number of collections of short stories, including Einstein’s Monsters, Two Stories, God’s Dice, Heavy Water and Other Stories, Amis Omnibus, The Fiction of Martin Amis, and Vintage Amis. Saturn 3 and London Fields were both adapted from his screenplays. 

The Rachel Papers, Dead Baby, and Out of Blue are just a few of the movies that he has written screenplays for, in addition to the television miniseries Money and the television movie The Nihilist’s Double Vision.
