Biography

Josh Freese was born on December 25, 1972, in Orlando, Florida, United States of America. His father, Stan Freese, was the band director at Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California, while his mother was a classical pianist. When Freese was eight years old, he began playing the drums. El Dorado High School in Placentia, California, was where Freese went to school.

He began performing professionally when he was 12 years old (in a mostly Top 40 band at Disneyland). He was a member of Polo, a teen-and-tween rock band that won the Junior Star Search. Before joining the Magic Kingdom, Polo had a drummer, band founder Jimmy Keegan, but they made way on stage for the son of Disneyland’s Director of Bands, Stan Freese.

Other bands on the same stage were constrained to performing Top 40 hits, but Polo was not restricted in this way. The band recorded and published an eponymous EP, which was played on KROQ.

Josh Freese dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and began touring and recording, first with Dweezil Zappa and later with the Vandals. In the previous 25 years, he has worked with several well-known artists as a first-call session drummer, band member, and occasionally as a temporary replacement.
