Who is Kabelo Gwamanda?

Kabelo Gwamanda is a politician from South Africa. Since May 2023, he has been the mayor of Johannesburg. He is the ninth executive mayor of the metropolitan municipality since 2016. He is a member of the Al Jama’ah party.

Biography

Kabelo Gwamanda was born in Soweto in 1982. Since he grew up in a politically active home, his mother, an avid political activist, instilled in him the desire to pursue a career in law.

Gwamanda later earned a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. After finishing his education, Gwamanda accepted a clerkship at the famous South African Constitutional Court under Justice Ismail Mohamed.

Following that, he worked as a legal researcher for the South African Law Reform Commission, where he was instrumental in the development of numerous significant pieces of legislation, including the Promotion of Equality and the Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act.

Gwamanda has also worked as a human rights lawyer with the Legal Resource Centre in South Africa, a non-profit organization that provides legal aid to underprivileged and disadvantaged people. While at the Centre, he was involved in various landmark cases, including the illegality of evicting informal settlements without a court order

Following the resignation of fellow Al Jama’ah councillor, Thapelo Amad as mayor of Johannesburg as a result of pressure from coalition partners, the African National Congress, the largest party in council, endorsed Gwamanda for the position of mayor on May 5, 2023 in order to maintain its alliance with the Economic Freedom Fighters, which is also a party in council. This was done in order to keep the Economic Freedom Fighters as a coalition partner.

During a vote for the council that was held on the same day, it was conducted using a secret ballot, and he received 139 votes out of a total of 266 votes. Shortly after he was elected, Gwamanda disclosed the members of his mayoral committee.

The caucus of the Democratic Alliance in the council has referred to Gwamanda as a “scammer” in light of claims that he tricked locals into participating in a funeral/investment plan through his company, iThemba Lama Afrika. The scheme was allegedly perpetrated on villagers.
