Cause of Death

Due to diverticulitis, Roland was admitted to the hospital on September 10, 2002. A piece of Roland’s colon had to be removed, and he required 18 blood transfusions. Roland recovered quickly and returned to work at the station in late October.

John Roland died on May 7, 2023, at the age of 81.

Career

He was hired as a reporter by KTTV, which was owned by Metromedia at the time. He covered the Charles Manson trial and the killing of President John F. Kennedy at the station before going to sister station WNEW-TV (now Fox-owned WNYW) in New York City in December 1969.

During his early years at WNEW/WNYW, he served as a political reporter and weekend anchor for The 10 O’Clock News. He also created a cuisine segment that was included on the show on a regular basis. When Bill Jorgensen, who had hosted the show from its inception in 1967, left to work for rival station WPIX, he took over as the midnight anchor.

Bill McCreary, Cora-Ann Mihalik, and Rosanna Scotto have all served as co-anchors with Roland over the years. In order to prepare for his role as anchor of WNYW’s new 5:00 and 6:00 PM newscasts, he left the 10:00 newscast in 2003. That autumn, these newscasts debuted.

After a lengthy term at the station, he announced his departure on June 4, 2004. Roland also created a Marcello restaurant in New York in the late 1980s with two partners, one of whom left the enterprise before the restaurant opened.

Roland appeared in a number of films and was also occasionally listed as a television personality. John played a television anchor in The Object of My Affection (1998), Eyewitness (1981), and Hero at Large (1980). He played himself in The Scout (1994).

Dennis Michael Lynch directed three documentaries about him: King of the Hamptons (2011), They Come to America (2012), and They Come to America 2 (2013): The Price of Amnesty.
