Jason Kennison was born in 1983 in the city of Perth, in the Australian state of Western Australia. He began his life as a young child as an avid sportsman and went on to compete in marathons and triathlons. In 2007, he was the victim of a terrible car accident that resulted in him sustaining an injury to his spinal cord. He went through rehabilitation and was eventually able to regain his ability to walk. His brother, whose name is Adrian Kennison, and his mother, whose name is Gill Kennison, are both known as Kennisons.

Kennison reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 18, 2023. He was descending the mountain the following day when he died of high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), a potentially fatal condition where the brain swells from lack of oxygen.
