Donna Adrian Gaines was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1948. She was the third of seven children. Her father was a butcher, and her mother was a schoolteacher.

Donna started singing at a young age. She sang in church and in school musicals. In 1967, she left for New York City to pursue a career in music. She joined the blues rock band Crow, but the group disbanded after a record label was only interested in signing the lead singer.

Donna stayed in New York and auditioned for a role in the musical Hair. She got the part and moved to Munich, Germany, to star in the production. She became fluent in German and sang in several musicals, including Ich bin ich, Godspell, and Show Boat.

In 1968, Donna released her first single, a German version of the song “Aquarius” from Hair. She released two more singles in the early 1970s.
