Biography

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Willie Maxine Perry and carpenter Emmitt Perry Sr., Tyler Perry, originally named Emmitt Perry Jr., had a difficult childhood. His mother, unlike his abusive father, provided him with a sense of refuge and contentment by taking him to church every week. At the age of 16, he legally changed his name from Emmitt to Tyler, seeking to distance himself from his father.

Years later, inspired by the film Precious, Perry revealed a painful truth: he had been molested by a friend’s mother at age 10. Additionally, he had been molested by three men prior to this and later learned that his own father had molested his friend. A DNA test confirmed that Emmitt Sr. was not Perry’s biological father.

Despite not completing high school, Perry earned a General Educational Development (GED) diploma. In his early 20s, while watching The Oprah Winfrey Show, he was struck by a guest’s comment about the therapeutic power of writing, inspiring him to pursue writing as a career. He began writing letters to himself, which eventually became the foundation for the musical “I Know I’ve Been Changed.”
