Tems was born on June 11, 1995, to Mr. and Mrs. Openiyi, a Yoruba family. Her father is British-Nigerian, and she received her British citizenship from him. Her mother is a Nigerian from the South Western region.
Tems was born in the city of Lagos to parents who named her Temilade Openiyi. She is the family’s second child and has an older brother. The Openiyis moved to the United Kingdom shortly after her birth, but their stay was cut short when her parents divorced. As a result, she and her brother returned to Nigeria with their mother, While her father remained in the United Kingdom.
