Steve Cooper was born on 26 January 1979 in Pontypridd, Wales. He began his playing career as a trainee at Cardiff City, but failed to make a first-team appearance. He then moved to Nottingham Forest, where he made 12 appearances in the Football League.
In 2000, he moved to Kidderminster Harriers, where he made 100 appearances and scored 12 goals. He then moved to Swansea City, where he made 116 appearances and scored 11 goals. He retired from playing in 2007.

Career
Cooper joined Wrexham in the latter half of the 1990s but was never used by the club in any competitive match. The manager Brian Flynn was the one who signed him, and he was the one who suggested that Cooper seek a career in coaching rather than playing professionally.
After that, Cooper participated in the Welsh football leagues for Total Network Solutions, Rhyl, Bangor City, and Porthmadog, among other teams. In 2002, he was a member of Bangor City’s team that competed in the UEFA Cup against FK Sartid Smederevo.
After retiring from playing, Cooper began his coaching career as a youth team coach at Swansea City. He was appointed manager of the Swansea City Under-18s team in 2011, and led them to the FA Youth Cup final in 2013. He was appointed manager of the Swansea City Under-21s team in 2014, and led them to the Premier League 2 title in 2015.
In 2016, Cooper was appointed manager of League One club Barnsley. He led Barnsley to promotion to the Championship in his first season in charge. Steve was appointed manager of Championship club Nottingham Forest in 2019. Cooper led Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season.
