Who is Omoyele Sowore?

Omoyele “Yele” Sowore is a pro-democracy and human rights activist best known for founding the online news site Sahara Reporters.

In August of 2018, he founded the African Action Congress, a political party, and ran as its presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections. He is also running for president as of 2023.

Biography

Omoyele Sowore, also known as Yele Sowore, is a Nigerian human rights activist who was born on February 16, 1971, in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. Omoyele Sowore is originally from Ese-Odo in Ondo State, which is located in Nigeria’s South-Western region.

Sowore came from a polygamous family with sixteen children, so he didn’t get much attention. At the age of 12, he learned to ride a motorcycle, which he usually takes to the lake for fishing to feed his family before embarking on the journey to school.

Omoyele Sowore attended basic primary school before moving on to secondary school. Sowore later continued his education at the tertiary level, attending the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where he studied Geography and Planning and received his Bachelor’s Degree between 1989 and 1995.

He began his political career and activism as an undergraduate, which resulted in him being expelled twice before finally graduating from university. During his time in school, he was the Student Union President and was involved in numerous student protests.

He earned a Master of Public Administration from Colombia University.

Omoyele Sowore is happily married to his wife of over 17 years, Opeyemi Oluwole Sowore, a Nigerian-American, and they have two children. His family resides in Haworth, New Jersey.

Sowore Omoyele Since his youth, he has been an activist; in 2019, he ran for president of Nigeria under the African Action Congress (AAC), but lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In addition to his political affiliation, he is a blogger, a writer, and the founder of the well-known news agency Sahara Reporters, which he founded in Manhattan in 2006.

Sowore also taught Modern African History at the City University of New York and Post Colonial African History at the School of Art in New York.
