Mandisa Muriel Lindelwa Maya Mlokoti, who was born on March 20, 1964, is the first woman to be appointed to the position of Deputy Chief Justice in South Africa.

In addition to this, she is the first woman to hold the position of President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa (SCA) from May 26, 2017 and continues to hold this position until August 31, 2022. Furthermore, she is the first woman to hold the position of Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga since July 1, 2021.

In the past, she had been a judge in the Mthatha High Court, a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal, and the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. In addition, she had held acting roles in a number of other courts.

Maya Ramaphosa accepted the nomination to become South Africa’s Deputy Chief Justice on May 3, 2022. The nomination came from President Cyril Ramaphosa. On September 1, 2022, she took office as president.

Biography

Mandisa Maya was the eldest of six children born to her mother and father, both of whom worked as educators. She was born on March 20, 1964 in Tsolo, Eastern Cape. Maya attended King William’s Town, which was located in the Ciskei Bantustan (homeland) during the time of apartheid, for her childhood and matriculation at St. John’s College.

She went on to get three degrees in law between the years 1986 and 1990, one each from the universities of the Transkei, the University of Natal, and Duke University in the United States.

Career

Before becoming an interpreter and prosecutor at The Magistrate’s Court in Mthatha, Maya was a legal clerk at Dazana Mafungo Inc. in Mthatha from 1987 to 1988. After that, she worked at The Magistrate’s Court in Mthatha. After that, she worked as an assistant State Law Adviser from 1991 to 1993, and then in 1993 she did her pupillage at the Johannesburg Bar. 

She worked as a legal policy counsel and lobbyist for a period of time in the United States, namely for the Woman’s Legal Defense Fund in Washington, District of Columbia. Maya worked as a law lecturer at the University of Transkei from 1993 until 1995, during which time she also maintained a legal practice in the country of Transkei.

Maya was appointed to her first judicial position in 1999, initially serving as an acting judge at the Mthatha High Court. She later went on to serve on the Labour Court in Grahamstown, the Bisho High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal beginning in 2005, and the Constitutional Court in 2011. In 2008, she served as an acting judge on the Supreme Court of Namibia, and in 2015, she did the same on the Appeals Court of Lesotho.

In 2016, Maya became the first woman to ever assume the position of President of South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal after she was selected to the position.
