Kimberly M. Gardner best known as Kim is a Missouri politician and attorney who was born on August 2, 1975. She was the city’s circuit attorney in St. Louis, Missouri. She previously served in Missouri’s House of Representatives.
Gardner was asked to retire by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey in February 2023 after a serial offender who had breached house arrest 51 times caused a teenage girl to lose both of her legs.

Biography
Kim Gardner was born in 1975 and spent her childhood in the city of St. Louis, in the state of Missouri. She worked at the funeral house that her family owns in North St. Louis, which she also helped run. In 1999, she graduated from Harris–Stowe State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in healthcare administration.
Her major was healthcare administration. The following year, in 2003, she graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the Saint Louis University School of Law. In 2012, she returned to Saint Louis University to get a Master of Science in nursing degree.

Career
Before being elected as Circuit Attorney, Gardner served as an assistant prosecutor (St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office, 2005-2010) and at the law firm Bell, Kirksey & Associates. She served as the state representative representing Missouri’s 77th district from 2013 until 2017.
On January 6, 2017, Gardner was sworn into office. She made history as the first African American to lead the Office of the Circuit Attorney.
The St. Louis Police Department filed 7,045 felony cases for prosecution in 2019, but only 1,641 were actually pursued by Gardner’s office. Despite the police union’s assurances that there was enough evidence to prosecute, many were sent back to the police due to a lack of proof.
Former St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officer Jason Stockley was charged with first-degree murder for his role in the shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith, and Gardner picked up her predecessor Jennifer Joyce’s prosecution of Stockley. Protests erupted in the latter months of 2017 after Judge Timothy Wilson’s unusual acquittal in the bench trial.
Gardner, as Circuit Attorney, removed or lowered the amount of payment necessary for minor, nonviolent offenses. She is also increasing diversion and drug court programs and consulting on these problems with the Vera Institute of Justice.
She is putting an end to low-level marijuana possession convictions and dropping many cases. The CAO is collaborating with the Midwest Innocence Project on wrongful convictions, thanks to a federal grant.
