He began his career in theater, appearing in the 1981 Broadway production The First, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He then went on to play James “Thunder” Early in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls in 1982. In 1983, he starred in the Robert Altman film Streamers, for which he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.

Grier has had a successful career in both film and television. He is best known for his work on the sketch comedy television show In Living Color (1990-1994), where he created and portrayed some of the show’s most memorable characters. He has also starred in films such as Boomerang (1992), Jumanji (1995), and Bewitched (2005).

David Alan Grier was born on June 30, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of Aretas Ruth (née Blaney), a school teacher, and William Henry Grier, a psychiatrist and writer. 

He has two siblings. Grier graduated from Detroit’s Cass Technical High School, and received a B.A. in radio, television, and film from the University of Michigan. He then attended the Yale School of Drama, graduating with an MFA in 1981.

Grier began his career in theater, appearing in productions of The First, Dreamgirls, and A Soldier’s Play. He made his film debut in 1983 in the drama Streamer. He went on to appear in films such as Boomerang (1992), Jumanji (1995), Bewitched (2005), and Peeples (2013).

In 1990, Grier joined the cast of the sketch comedy television show In Living Color. He quickly became one of the show’s most popular cast members, known for his characters such as Homey D. Clown, Handiman, and Mr. Robinson. In Living Color ran for four seasons and was a critical and commercial success.

After In Living Color, Grier continued to work in both film and television. He starred in the sitcoms DAG (2000-2001) and Life with Bonnie (2002-2004). He also had recurring roles on the shows The Carmichael Show (2015-2017) and Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! (2021).

Grier has also had a successful career in voice acting. He has voiced characters in the animated films Madagascar (2005), Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008), and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012). He also voiced the character of Eddie Walker in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
