Mamie Till-Mobley born Mamie Elizabeth Carthan was an American educator and activist. She is best known as the mother of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955. Biography

Mamie Till-Mobley was born in Webb, Mississippi, in 1921. When she was two, her family moved to Argo, Illinois, as part of the Great Migration.

Mamie was a smart student and graduated from Argo Community High School, as the first African American student on the “A” Honor roll.

Her parents divorced when she was 13, but Mamie stayed close to both of them. Her mother, Alma Carthan, encouraged Mamie to study and pursue her dreams.

After high school, Mamie attended Chicago Teachers College and became an elementary school teacher in Chicago.

Mamie Till-Mobley was a brilliant educator and activist who fought for racial equality. She is best known for her role in the Civil Rights Movement after the murder of her son, Emmett Till, in 1955.

Personal Life

Mamie Till-Mobley married three times. Her first husband, Louis Till, was executed in 1945 for the rape and murder of a young woman in Italy. In 1951, she married Pink Bradley, but the marriage ended in divorce a year later. In 1957, she married Gene Mobley, who remained her husband until his death in 2000.

Mamie Till-Mobley died of heart failure on January 6, 2003.

Career

In 2003, Till-Mobley’s memoir, Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America, was published posthumously.
