Who is Wahid Satay?

Mr. Wahid Satay (1 January 1930 – 22 May 2023), also known as A. Wahid or S. M. Wahid, was a Singaporean actor, comedian and singer. He was known for his roles in black-and-white Malay films from the 1950s and 1960s, and was often dubbed the “Jerry Lewis of Malaya”. He died on May 22, 2023 in Singapore at the age of 93.

Biography

Wahid was born in the Dutch East Indies at the city of Indragiri, which is located in the province of Riau in Sumatra. and relocated in Singapore the  year 1935, where he launched his acting career in Malay films. The Geylang Malay School was where he spent his childhood and formed his early educational foundation.

Personal Life 

Satay was married twice and had 11 children. He was a devout Muslim and was known for his generosity and charitable work. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pesta Perdana awards ceremony in 2007.

Cause of Death

 Wahid Satay died on May 22, 2023 at the age of 93. He was found dead in his bed by his granddaughter. The cause of his death was due to complications from diabetes. He was buried at the Pusara Aman Muslim cemetery in Lim Chu Kang.

Career

Satay started out in the construction industry as a painter and carpenter. While he was working as a painter on the set of the 1957 film Pontianak, he caught the attention of the director L. Krishnan, who eventually hired him. Satay’s comedic timing and natural talent impressed Krishnan, and as a result, he extended an offer to cast him in one of the film’s roles. Following his success in Badang (1962), Naga Tasik Chini (1963), and Tuan Besar (1965), Satay went on to star in more than 30 other films. He was famous for his impersonations of animals as well as his slapstick style of humor.

In addition to his work in films, Wahid Satay was also a familiar face on a wide variety of television programs and in theatrical works. Both on the variety show Pesta Perdana and in the stage musical Puteri Gunung Ledang (1961), in which he appeared, he was a frequent performer on the show.
