Tommy Pham was born on March 8, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is of mixed race, with a father of African American and Vietnamese descent and a mother of African American descent. Pham is the first Vietnamese-American to play in MLB since pitcher Danny Graves in 2006.

Pham attended Durango High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he played baseball and football. He was a two-time all-state baseball selection and a two-time all-conference football selection. After high school, Pham attended California State University, Fullerton, where he played baseball for the Titans. He was a two-time All-American selection and was named the Big West Conference Player of the Year in 2010.

Pham is married to his wife, Kiley. They have one child together. Pham is known for his outspoken personality and his love of anime.

Pham is the first person of Vietnamese descent to play in Major League Baseball since pitcher Danny Graves in 2006. He suffers from keratoconus, a rare eye disorder which causes degenerative vision. 

Pham started experiencing vision issues in 2008 and began wearing contact lenses in 2009, which gave him 20/15 vision in both eyes. Pham had surgery at UC San Diego Health following a stabbing, which took place on October 11, 2020, during a fight in San Diego outside a local strip club.

Tommy Pham’s professional baseball career began in 2006 when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 16th round of the MLB draft. He spent the next eight seasons working his way up through the Cardinals’ minor league system, before making his MLB debut in 2014.

Pham’s rookie season with the Cardinals was a success, as he hit .284 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in 112 games. He continued to be a productive player for the Cardinals in 2015 and 2016, before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018.

Pham had a strong season with the Rays in 2018, hitting .272 with 21 home runs and 63 RBIs in 159 games. He was traded to the San Diego Padres in 2019, and continued to be a valuable player for them in 2020 and 2021.
