Career

Bakker began his career in Christian broadcasting in the early 1960s. He and Tammy Faye worked for Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network before launching their own show, The PTL Club, in 1974.

The PTL Club quickly became one of the most popular Christian television shows in the world. At its peak, the show was raising over $1 million per week in donations from viewers. Bakker used the money to fund his growing ministry, which included a Christian theme park called Heritage USA.

However, Bakker’s success was built on a foundation of fraud and deceit. In 1987, it was revealed that he had been paying off Hahn to keep quiet about their sexual encounter. Bakker was also found to have been misappropriating millions of dollars in church funds.

Bakker was forced to resign from PTL and was subsequently convicted of fraud. He served five years in prison and was released in 1994.

After his release from prison, Bakker returned to televangelism. He launched The Jim Bakker Show in 1996 and has been broadcasting ever since.
