Who is Ibrahim Traore?

Ibrahim Traore is a Burkinabè military officer who has been the interim leader of Burkina Faso since the 30 September 2022 coup d’état which ousted interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. At age 34, Traoré is currently the youngest serving president in the world.


Ibrahim Traore was born in Kéra, Burkina Faso, in 1988. After graduating from high school in Bobo-Dioulasso, he studied geology at the University of Ouagadougou. There, he was a member of the Muslim Student Association and the Marxist Association nationale des étudiants du Burkina (ANEB). He graduated with honors.

In 2009, Traoré joined the Burkina Faso army. He graduated from the Georges-Namoano Military Academy and was sent to Morocco for anti-aircraft training. He was then transferred to an infantry unit in Kaya, a town in northern Burkina Faso.

In 2014, Traoré was promoted to lieutenant and joined MINUSMA, a United Nations peacekeeping force involved in the Mali War. In 2018, he was cited as one of the MINUSMA soldiers who “showed courage” during major rebel attacks in the Tombouctou Region.

Traore then returned to Burkina Faso, where he assisted in operations against the escalating jihadist insurgency. He fought at Djibo, in the “Otapuanu offensive” of 2019, and several other counter-insurgency operations in the country’s north. He was promoted to captain in 2020.

Ibrahim Traore’s Career

Ibrahim Traoré’s military career began in 2010, when he graduated from the National Military Academy in Pô, Burkina Faso. He was then assigned to the artillery regiment in Kaya, where he served for several years.

In 2014, Traoré was promoted to lieutenant and deployed to Mali as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINUSMA). He served in MINUSMA for two years, during which time he participated in several counter-insurgency operations against jihadist militants.

In 2016, Traoré returned to Burkina Faso, where he continued to serve in the artillery regiment. He was also part of the group of army officers that supported the January 2022 Burkina Faso coup d’état.

On September 30, 2022, Traoré led a coup against interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. He accused Damiba of failing to tackle the country’s jihadist insurgency. Traoré declared himself the new head of the Patriotic Movement for Conservation and Restoration military junta, and five days later – on October 6 – he announced that he was Burkina Faso’s new transitional president.

Traoré has promised to return power to civilian authorities in Burkina Faso by July 2024. He has also said that he will prioritize the fight against jihadist insurgency and the improvement of the country’s economy.
