Who is Blueface? 

Blueface is the stage name of Johnathan Jamall Porter (born January 20, 1997), an American rapper. After releasing the music video for his song “Respect My Cryppin'” in October 2018, he became a global meme owing to his unconventional rapping technique.

He was signed to Cash Money West, the West Coast division of Birdman’s Cash Money Records label, the following month.  In 2019, his biggest popular hit to date was a remix of his song “Thotiana” (with Cardi B and YG), which peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Find the Beat, his debut studio album, was released in 2020.

Biography

Blueface was born in Los Angeles, California on January 20, 1997. He grew up in Mid-City, downtown Los Angeles, and attended several elementary schools before relocating to Santa Clarita Valley with his mother, but eventually settling in Oakland with his father. 

Blueface moved to the San Fernando Valley and joined the marching band, where he played alto saxophone, and the football team, where he became the starting quarterback in 2014, standing 6 ft 3 in (191 cm) and weighing 162 pounds (73.5 kg).

Jonathan led the squad to the East Valley League championship in 2014 as the starting quarterback. Porter signed to Fayetteville State University and briefly played college football before leaving in 2016. He threw for 1,234 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2013 and 1,724 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2014.

Blueface became interested in rap music at a young age, listening primarily to 50 Cent, The Game, and Snoop Dogg.

Blueface’s father is Johnathan Porter, and his mother is Karlissa Angelic Saffold. The rapper’s older brother served 13 years in prison for accidently killing someone. Kali Miller is his sister, although there isn’t much information about his parents available.

Career

After college, Blueface worked at an office depot and as a maintenance worker in California. Snoop Dogg, The Game, and 50 Cent inspired his early interest in rap music.

He used “Blueface Bleedem” in 2017. The name referenced the School Yard Crips gang. Blueface claims his hip-hop career was a fluke.

He was challenged to rhyme and jump on Laudiano’s beat upon arrival. He accepted the challenge, entered the vocal booth, and rapped for the first time.

Laudiano produced Blueface’s first song, “Deadlocs.” SoundCloud gained a small audience for the song. He released “F**k It Up” with Trendd in 2017.

Jonathan became Blueface in 2018. In June, he released “Dead Locs,” a Southern California-focused music project. “Thotiana” was on the album. He released a second EP, “Two Coccy,” on Spotify and SoundCloud the following year.

Cash Money West Records signed Blueface in 2018. The Cash Money West Coast division is controlled by Birdman. Thortiana, his first Billboard Hot 100 hit, arrived at #75 on the label. The song’s success inspired a remix.

After appearing on French Montana’s “Slide” and G-Eazy’s “West Coast,” Blueface became a popular California rapper. His “Bleed It” music video garnered over 2 million views in 24 hours. In May 2019, he released the video for “Stop Cappin,” which had over 10 million views and 5 million in the first four days.

He released 8-song “Dirt Bag” in August 2019. “Find The Beat” was his first album. The album reached 63 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Blueface collaborates with The Game, YG, Cardi B, Rich the Kid, NLE Choppa, Mozzy, Lil Pump, Offset, Lil Uzi, Drake, and French Montana.
