Biography

Amy Winehouse was born to Jewish parents on September 14, 1983, in London, England. Her father, Mitch Winehouse, was a taxi driver and window panel installer, and her mother, Janis Winehouse, was a chemist. Alex Winehouse was Winehouse’s older brother.

Winehouse grew up in the London neighbourhood of Southgate. She attended Osidge Primary School before moving on to Ashmole School. She also went to a Jewish Sunday school, although she claims she learned nothing about being Jewish there.

Her family influenced Winehouse’s interest in music. Her father frequently sung Frank Sinatra songs to her because her paternal grandmother was a singer. Winehouse’s parents divorced when she was nine years old, and she lived with her mother in Whetstone, London, and on weekends with her father and his girlfriend in Hatfield Heath, Essex.

Winehouse’s grandma advised her go to the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School on Saturdays to learn to sing and tap dance in 1992. She attended the school for four years and formed the Sweet ‘n’ Sour rap trio with her childhood friend Juliette Ashby.

Winehouse later attended Sylvia Young Theatre School, but was reportedly expelled at the age of 14 for “not applying herself” and for having her nose pierced. Her English instructor at school, on the other hand, recognised her as a great writer and projected that she would become a novelist or journalist.

Winehouse attended Mount School in Mill Hill and the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydon, but dropped out when she was 16 years old. She subsequently began working as an entertainment journalist for the World Entertainment News Network while simultaneously singing with the Bolsha Band, a local ensemble.
